Building Futures Together: Timber Ridge’s Citizenship Class Inspires Connection and Hope

At Timber Ridge at Talus, community isn’t just about where you live – it’s about how you live together. That spirit of connection and care is beautifully reflected in a one-of-a-kind initiative that’s changing lives: the Citizenship Class.

Offered several times throughout Timber Ridge’s 17-year history, the Citizenship Class was reignited in February 2025 by resident Maggie Thompson, a retired teacher and head of the Resident Education Committee. Moved by a desire to give back to the team members who make daily life at Timber Ridge so special, Mrs. Thompson decided to use her teaching experience to help staff members on their journeys toward U.S. citizenship.

What makes this program truly remarkable is that it’s funded and supported by the residents themselves. They cover class expenses, purchase study materials, and champion the success of every participant. This partnership between residents and staff is a living example of Timber Ridge’s values – particularly its promise to embrace and value our differences while creating extraordinary experiences for all who are part of the community.

The Citizenship Class, taught by Mrs. Thompson and supported by the Resident Education Committee, meets weekly and follows a hands-on format. Participants work through the detailed N-400 application for citizenship, practice the 100 civics questions that may be asked during the interview, and study independently with flash cards. The curriculum not only prepares participants for their exams, but also helps build confidence as they take this major step toward fulfilling lifelong goals.

According to William Abel, Director of Food and Beverage at Timber Ridge – and one of the program’s graduates – approximately ten staff members have participated so far, with six having completed their citizenship. “The class was intense but rewarding,” he shares. “It’s incredible to see how much support our residents have given us, not just financially but emotionally. It really shows what kind of place Timber Ridge is.”

While Mrs. Thompson modestly credits the staff for their hard work, everyone involved recognizes that her leadership and compassion made this initiative possible. Week after week, she guided participants through complex forms and unfamiliar terminology, creating a safe, encouraging environment where learning and laughter could flourish.

“Class was focused and serious at times,” says Abel, “especially since many people were nervous about the process. But knowing the residents believed in us made all the difference.”

The impact of the program reaches far beyond paperwork and tests. It represents the very essence of Timber Ridge’s culture: residents and team members working side by side, connected by mutual respect, gratitude, and genuine care for one another.

The success of the Citizenship Class underscores the community’s Hospitality Promises, from treating everyone with courteous respect to anticipating needs and making each person feel valued. It’s a living expression of what makes Timber Ridge truly extraordinary – a place where kindness is practiced daily and where people help one another build not just a community, but a future.
